We've been hibernating in our cozy little house all week as The Hubs and L'il E recover from Christmas colds. To pass the time we started a 1000 piece puzzle to accompany our copious cups of tea. It's been ages since I tackled a puzzle like this and I'm addicted.

What are your favourite puzzles?

it's movember time

Movember kicked off yesterday, so to pay tribute to all of those scuzzy flavour savours that will be growing for the next 29 days I've compiled my least favourite celebrity moustaches for your viewing pleasure.

John Waters.

Talk about HM!

Stevie Wonder

This one has always leaned too far onto the pubic hair side for me...

Dr. Phil

Would he still be so smart sans moustache?

Ron Jeremy

One word: Blech!

Hulk Hogan

Holla! This one is my all time fave. If you're going to go Movember styles this is the stache to grow.

Happy Movember! Raise some moolah y'all.

Oh the memories. This day just makes me feel giddy!

Be safe tonight kids!

smokey eyes

Friday night the Hubs and I hit the town while L'il E was being entertained by a trifecta of grandparents. Our destination was a romantic evening wedding at the Berkeley Church. To get glam for the fancy affair my friend and make-up artist Erin gave me beautiful smokey eyes and nude lips to go with my classic black dress. I love being made up and she did a fabulous job. I felt stunning and the Hubs and I had a super fun night complete with a trip to Poutini's to finish it off. Yum!

If you're looking for a make up artist Erin is your girl. You can contact her at eringuenter [at] yahoo [dot] ca and tell her I sent you. She does it all! The vanity shots prove it!

the view from here

I just thought I would check in and let y'all know that I'm still alive. Somehow I've thrown out my back and have been lying horizontal on my sofa for the passed couple of days. It appears lifting L'il E (or should I say Big E) has left me with a very weak low back and I can barely walk. When I do, I look like an 80 year riddled with osteoporosis.

That being said, I've been spending a lot of time surfing the web so I thought I would share some of my finds. Enjoy the links and your weekend. I'll be here lying around...sigh.

Watching this made my back hurt more, but got me excited for the ski/snowboard season.

Knitting goodness at Pickles. I just love looking at everything on this site.

Cool custom holiday cards at Pinhole Press. I've ordered from them before and the paper quality is top-notch.

time to give thanks

It's Thanksgiving weekend and I am stoked. Three days off and the weather is going to be gorgeous. We'll also be stuffing ourselves with delicious healthy food. Last Thanksgiving I made Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Squares (yum!) but this year I'm not sure yet (oh-oh!).

I have a lot to be thankful for these days but one person really stands out on my list and that person is the Hubs. L'il 'ol hormonal me hasn't been the easiest person to live with for the past year, but the Hubs has stuck by me and taken a lot on the chin. I feel very lucky to have such a supportive partner in crime and trusty sidekick.

Without you babes I wouldn't:

  • Have L'il E
  • Be organized
  • Have a shoulder to cry on
  • Have an ear to vent into
  • Have my best friend

Thanks for being there for me even on the days I'm a turbo bee-atch :)

Based on some feedback I received a couple of months ago I've toned down the posts about L'il E. Have you noticed?

I'm enjoying writing about other things and to be honest it's been challenging for my brain to come up with different topics. However, since E and I spend all day, every day together (we're BFFs) it's impossible not to throw a couple mummy posts in here and there.

I subscribe to this website (I'm sure you know it) called babycentre.com and yesterday in my inbox was the cutest article from them titled forty-two things that change when you have a baby. Some of the items made me roll my eyes, but here are the ones that really choked me up and a couple I added myself. If you're a mom I'm sure you'll agree. Tear drop.

  1. Every day is a surprise!
  2. You look at your baby in the mirror instead of yourself (BUT mummies please remember to look at yourselves, a little make-up and a brush of the hair works wonders for those tired eyes!).
  3. You discover an inner strength you never thought you had. (This one gave me goosebumps because it is so true, you might be feeling utterly exhausted but somehow you find the energy to be ON for your little munchkin).
  4. You learn that taking an uninterrupted shower is a luxury. (Do I really need to shave my legs today?).
  5. You finally find out the REAL reason you have those breasts. (You really do get to know the girls a lot better!).
  6. You realize you can love a complete stranger. (It's crazy, but the love just keeps getting stronger too!).
  7. You're never in a bad mood. (How can you be when those eyes and giggles are looking back at you?).
  8. You love your hubs in a completely new way. (Watching him be a dad is amazing).
  9. You become a crazy multi-tasker and you're always prepared.
  10. You see the world for the first time all over again.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

feedback please

For the last two months I've been living in a fantasy land. The Hubs was off work and looking for a new job, we went away on vacation and the weather was ah-mazing. Our days were filled with pure fun, but it was a little unrealistic right?! Now that The Hubs is back at work and our dream life is over (sad face) it's left me feeling frozen. Despite having a house to clean, groceries to do, sewing projects to work on, a garden to weed and mummies to hang with I don't feel like doing any of it! So, as I lazily sit here on my couch with L'il E amusing me I thought I would do some work on my blog.

While I was on my digital sabbatical I did some reflecting on fridaysoff and all of the categories I cover (there are quite a few!) and it got me thinking if I should just focus on one particular topic or continue what I'm doing. So I want to hear from you - my loverly readers - what brings you back to fridaysoff every day? Is it the recipes that I share? My rants about L'il E and life as a mum? Stuff I love in Toronto? Seeing my knitting and sewing projects and tutorials? Or maybe there is a category that I'm missing completely? Please fill me in. You can either leave a comment here or email me at alannabanks at gmail.

Your feedback will really help me out and it will provide content to make fridaysoff a better blog for you to read!

on sabbatical

Our little fam of three is going off the grid to Lunenburg, NS for some much needed R & R. I was going to write a bunch of posts and schedule them blah blah blah, but then I read Daphne's post about taking a digital sabbatical and decided I would take one too. For over a year I've been consistently writing and posting and think I deserve a break (right?!) so consider this "summer hours" for fridaysoff. I'll be quiet for two weeks (maybe three), but when I come back I hope to feel refreshed and bursting with content.

Speaking of summer hours do you work for a company that believes in them? I've been lucky enough to work for a company who does - we all get to leave early on Fridays throughout the summer. The co-founders (Max and Cameron) at Big Bang Technology take summer hours one step further and ensure their employees never work past 5:00 p.m.  They believe working overtime rewards bad behaviour and unfairly creates two group of employees - the heroes, those that stay late and the losers, those who let you down because they cannot or choose not to comply. They totally have a point and I like it. When everyone is putting in equal hours it becomes glaringly apparent who is getting work done through the day and who isn't. It also fosters happier employees because they still get to have a life. I have a lot of hobbies in addition to having a family and a blog, so when the clock strikes 5:00 I have a more work to do, but just a different kind and I think that makes me a more valuable employee in the end anyway.

So let's all enjoy these dog days of summer folks (there aren't many left - whimper) and maybe you should consider taking a digital sabbatical too or asking your employer for summer hours!

See you in a few weeks!

i don't get it

So ya I have a blog, but that doesn't mean I know anything about computers or coding or websites!

Please bare with me while I migrate fridaysoff to a new hosting service. The Hubs is helping (he's a wizard) and as a result we might be divorced by the end of the week (just kidding).

Love you guys and thanks for continuing to read.
