Most of the local farmers markets in Toronto are winding down  for the season and that means no more fresh fruit and veggies until next Spring (sad face).  Fortunately there are some fabulous small businesses that deliver the good stuff right to you door!

Wanigan Fruits and Vegetables is a great little company based in Brampton that delivers boxes of seasonal and organic produce. You can choose from an a la carte menu of items or you can get a suprise box (they call it a Wanigan) on a weekly basis. The price is right (range from $25-$54 for a box depending on size) and the fruit and veg are delicious! The best part is, you don't really know what you're getting so you get try items you wouldn't normally pick out at the grocery store.

summer colds suck

This is my second day home from work battling a summer cold. My throat hurts, my nose is running and I've generally been feeling like crap. I've been nursing myself back to the living with lemon water, soup, toast and ginger tea and I think it's working (please God I hope so!).

I'm not sure I can take another day of TLC, Y&R and the Ellen Degeneres Show so tonight, the clincher will be a steaming bowl of #13 at the Golden Turtle. It usually cures what ails me whether it's a hangover, a cold, or just a bad day so fingers crossed!

Yum and bring on the spicy goodness. I'll make sure to bring lots of Kleenex.

try-a-tri

As I mentioned, my hubs and I took a trip up to Rice Lake to our friends' cottage for the annual Rice Lake Invitational. Basically it's an excuse to eat lot's of chips, drink and have fun for the weekend, but in order to partake in the former you have to participate in the try-a-tri at 9:00 am Saturday morning. If you've never heard of a try-a tri it's a mini triathalon that includes a 375 metre swim, a 10km bike and a 2.5km run (sounds easy right?).

Unfortunately we don't do it naked (as I may have proposed in the photo above) but maybe it's a thought for next year? Congrats to the winning lady, man and couple! To my despair I did not get my name on the trophy this year, but there is hope for next time.

This morning I woke up at 5:30 am (ya I know it's early) and could not get back to sleep. So I decided to take an early morning stroll instead of just lying there wishing I could fall back asleep. There is something so nice about taking in the streets before the rest of the city starts to buzz. Everything was so quiet, the air smelled fresh and I felt like I was the only one awake. It was such a lovely start to my day!

I wish I could say that I'm going to make this a habit, but I love sleeping so I'll probably wait until the next early morning that I lay tossing and turning.

so glad it's the (long) weekend

It's been another long week y'all and this one was capped off with a lot of stress. I admit I am a little neurotic and my favourite pass time is worrying, but I don't often stress like I did this week (stop laughing, I know people who know me personally are rolling their eyes!)

When stress hits me it goes straight to my head and last night my head was pounding. Fortunately I didn't have plans (thank God!) and I surrendered. Here are some ways I deal with stress. What are yours?

  • Venting (for all you husbands/boyfriends out there, just listen don't talk, let her get it all out)
  • Quiet time (curl up and take a time out for just 20 mins)
  • Advil Liquigels (my saviour!)
  • Bubble bath/shower (when I'm stressed I go straight for a swim in the tub)
  • Steaming cup of Chocolate Ovaltine (deelish!)
  • Long walk (mix with venting, it's the ultimate combo)

Hopefully you're not feeling stressed today! I'm not :) It's the long weekend!!

When a new gum comes on the market I snap it up (I love gum!). Glee Gum is not new (I know) but I've always wanted to give it a try and today I did. I was all set to give it a horrible review (tastes like spearmint Thrills and looses it's flavour in 30 seconds) but after doing some research for this post I kinda fell in love with their brand.

The company that makes Glee Gum (Verve Inc.) is an independent, family-owned business dedicated to linking world communities and creating responsible (social and environmental) products and activities. In addition to their amazing work they have an education program (Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit) that teaches little ones about the world around them.

sweat it out

I love working out and being active, but tend to get bored with workouts easily. As we all do, right?

I recently found one that I'm in love with and that you can do from home...AMAZING. The work-out is The Ultimate at-home boot camp and I found it in my new favourite magazine Best Health. From warm up to cool down it only takes up about an hour of your time. I'd say it's the best at-home workout I've tried since hitting the deck everyday with Tony Horton and his P90X videos.
