stroller haters

Now that I'm a mum I've discovered that a lot of people out there hate us stroller pushers (humph). I remember reading a Toronto Life article about how people find yuppie parents and their giant strollers annoying (whatever!), but didn't think I would ever be a recipient of the scoffs and eye rolls. If I had the balls I would bite back but I'm too nice. So here it is. I want all you stroller haters to know that we're not trying to ruin your lives we're just looking for some socialization. It's  a long day in the house with a crying baby and going to a coffee shop once a day or just taking a walk is an escape from the four walls of our homes. Here is some stroller etiquette for all you haters (follow these and it will make her day):

  1. If you see a woman visibly struggling with her stroller and the door of a store/coffee shop give the girl a hand and hold the door open.
  2. When you're walking on the sidewalk and you see a stroller pusher approaching move over just a smidge (yes I've almost been pushed onto the street).
  3. Help a mom out when she's trying to get on the streetcar with her stroller in one arm and baby in the other.

Karma people!

Dear Steve,

What an insensitive & rude comment. I hope it was some sort of a silly joke… Clearly you have no kids or common sense.

I’m not a stroller hater but I DO have a problem when you encounter a Mum who (almost) pushes you off the sidewalk! It’s almost used as a battery ram in some cases. I value my limbs. Please don’t run over them if I don’t jump out of the way immediately. I will give you lots of leeway, trust me – just give me a sec to do so.

Just yesterday I was out in my ‘hood and a Mum with a couple kids was rolling my way. I stepped out of her path and nary got a ’thank you.’ I have no issue moving aside so the huge stroller can get by, but please… be courteous when someone does so. I think much of the distain from strollers comes from situations like the ones that I’ve mentioned. Sadly, it happens on too many occasions! I’d love to encounter Mums (like you!) who just want to get some air and not strike fear into other walkers.

I’m out on the sidewalks of my fair city a lot. With a wee pup who loves to go for long walks, we track more miles than most. Now if you stroll with intent to flatten my dog, you’ll really see me angry. Unfortunately, it’s almost happened in more than one case. Not cool.

Let’s share the sidewalk, people.

Now, don’t get me started on people who ride their bikes on the sidewalks. That’s my #1 pet peeve…

What a joke. People with strollers think they own the sidewalks. Try going for a run or a walk down by the water. Idiots pushing strollers will stop in the middle of the path to tend to the kid not caring about those around. Move off the path. I don’t care what’s wrong with your kid or how long you’ve been couped up inside. Not my problem so don’t make it my problem. Don’t get me started on the “courtesy” parking spaces for cars with kids. What a joke and waste of space.
